Sepertinya peluncuran God of War: Sons of Sparta di ajang State of Play kemarin tidak berjalan semulus yang dibayangkan, terutama di mata David Jaffe. Sang pencipta God of War ini rupanya merasa kurang sreg dengan arah baru yang diambil lewat game 2D side-scroller hasil kolaborasi Mega Cat Studios dan Santa Monica Studio tersebut.
Padahal, game ini mencoba mengangkat kisah canon masa muda Kratos dan Deimos saat menjalani latihan brutal di Spartan Agoge, namun bagi Jaffe, eksekusinya justru terasa jauh dari ekspektasi.
Kritik Pedas dari Sang Kreator Asli
Melalui video terbaru di kanal YouTube miliknya, David Jaffe tidak menahan diri untuk meluapkan kekecewaannya. Meski ia mengaku sebenarnya sudah lama mendambakan God of War dalam format 2.5D, baginya Sons of Sparta bukanlah apa yang ia bayangkan selama ini. Jaffe secara terang-terangan menyebut game ini dengan kata-kata kasar seperti “sampah” dan “bodoh”, bahkan ia menegaskan tidak merekomendasikan siapapun untuk memainkannya.
Walaupun ia menilai gameplay-nya masih berfungsi dengan baik, Jaffe tetap tidak habis pikir mengapa proyek semacam ini bisa sampai mendapatkan lampu hijau untuk dirilis.

Narasi Dianggap Berlebihan
Salah satu poin utama yang membuat Jaffe kesal adalah pendekatan ceritanya yang dinilai terlalu banyak basa-basi. Berdasarkan pengalamannya memainkan satu jam pertama, ia merasa durasi permainan terlalu sering terpotong oleh dialog antar karakter yang tidak ada habisnya.
Jaffe merasa kualitas akting suara dan penulisan ceritanya tidak cukup kuat untuk menopang ambisi narasi tersebut. Ia bahkan menyindir bahwa tim developer saat ini tampaknya terlalu terobsesi dengan cerita hingga melupakan esensi utama dari apa yang membuat God of War dicintai oleh para penggemarnya sejak dulu.
Kratos Disebut Kehilangan Karakteristiknya
Jaffe juga menyoroti perubahan penggambaran Kratos yang menurutnya sangat aneh. Ia merasa keputusan untuk menampilkan Kratos sebagai “anak kecil generik” adalah kesalahan besar, mengingat kesuksesan seri ini dibangun di atas sosok Kratos yang brutal dan ikonik, baik di era Yunani maupun era 2018.
Baginya, mengambil karakter yang sudah bernilai miliaran dolar dan mengubahnya menjadi sosok yang tidak dikenali adalah langkah yang tidak masuk akal. Jaffe berpendapat bahwa jika nama God of War dicopot dari judulnya, orang-orang mungkin tidak akan tertarik sama sekali untuk melirik game ini.
Kualitas Game Yang Bikin Kecewa
Kekecewaan Jaffe semakin mendalam saat ia membandingkan kualitas produksi Sons of Sparta dengan game 2D side-scroller lainnya yang baru saja rilis, seperti Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound. Menurutnya, para pemain mengharapkan standar produksi yang lebih tinggi, animasi yang lebih halus, dan suasana yang lebih kelam.
Jaffe menyarankan bahwa jika developer ingin membuat God of War dalam format 2D, mereka seharusnya berkaca pada game seperti Blasphemous yang memiliki nada kekerasan dan atmosfer yang lebih sesuai dengan jiwa God of War. Baginya, rilisnya game ini justru mencerminkan adanya penurunan standar eksekutif di pihak Sony dalam memahami keinginan pasar.
