Epic Games kembali memberikan penjelasan soal tantangan performa di game berbasis Unreal Engine 5 (UE5). Dalam sebuah wawancara media di ajang Unreal Fest 2025 di Seoul, Korea Selatan, CEO Epic Games Tim Sweeney menegaskan bahwa masalah performa bukan sepenuhnya karena mesin game, melainkan karena cara pengembang mengoptimalkan game mereka.
Menurut Sweeney, banyak developer cenderung mengerjakan game untuk perangkat high-end terlebih dahulu, kemudian baru melakukan pengujian dan optimalisasi di perangkat berspesifikasi rendah menjelang akhir pengembangan. “Penyebab utama mengapa game berbasis Unreal Engine 5 tidak berjalan mulus di beberapa PC atau GPU adalah proses pengembangannya,” kata Sweeney. “Idealnya, optimalisasi dilakukan sejak awal sebelum konten skala besar dibuat.”
Epic Games Siapkan Dua Solusi Utama
Sweeney menekankan bahwa optimalisasi bukan pekerjaan mudah dan membutuhkan usaha yang signifikan. Untuk membantu developer, Epic Games kini menyiapkan dua langkah besar:
- Peningkatan dukungan Unreal Engine – Epic berencana menambahkan fitur otomatisasi untuk proses optimalisasi lintas perangkat. Tujuannya agar developer bisa lebih cepat dan mudah melakukan penyesuaian performa.
- Pelatihan dan pendampingan developer – Epic juga akan meningkatkan edukasi terkait pentingnya optimalisasi sejak awal. Jika diperlukan, tim engineer Epic siap turun langsung memberikan intervensi teknis dan bantuan.
Kompleksitas Game Semakin Tinggi
Sweeney juga mengingatkan bahwa dibandingkan 10 tahun lalu, kompleksitas game modern jauh lebih tinggi, sehingga optimalisasi di level engine saja tidak cukup. Karena itu, kolaborasi antara developer game dan pengembang engine kini jadi semakin penting.
Sebagai contoh, pengalaman Epic dalam mengembangkan Fortnite akan diintegrasikan langsung ke Unreal Engine. Teknologi dan teknik optimalisasi yang sudah terbukti dipakai untuk memastikan game bisa tetap berjalan lancar, bahkan di PC berspesifikasi rendah.
Game Unreal Engine 5 Yang Sempat Jadi Sorotan
Beberapa game yang menggunakan Unreal Engine 5 sebelumnya memang sempat menuai kritik soal performa. Judul seperti Remnant II, Lords of the Fallen, hingga Ark: Survival Ascended diluncurkan dengan masalah framerate tidak stabil dan kebutuhan spesifikasi PC yang tinggi. Kritik ini memicu perdebatan di komunitas gamer, apakah UE5 terlalu berat, atau developer yang kurang melakukan optimalisasi.
